The Tower of Babel: Cloned
By Travis K. McSherley

"And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do" (Genesis 11:6).

A metaphorical tower of Babel is being constructed in the world today.  Science seems bound and determined to push all limits of morality and values as far as they will go.  The language that is widely spoken now -- genetics.  One of the biggest stories of last year was that scientists discovered the code of DNA.  A few years ago they produced Dolly, the first cloned sheep.  Now, the tower of genetics is being built with the intent of reaching human cloning.

"Playing God" is hardly a new idea.  Creating clones has been the subject of science fiction for a long time.  But today, science is working to make these fantasies reality.  Not surprisingly, what began as a project to create healthier livestock and animal products has dared enter the realm of trying to "create" a human being.  One can only begin to imagine the physical and spiritual ramifications of such ideas.

Fortunately, for now, most of the world's leaders are apprehensive about plowing ahead too fast in these studies.  However, Britain's House of Lords voted earlier this year to allow the cloning of human embryos for medical experimentation.  And a group of "experts" are pressing onward toward birthing clones for infertile couples; they hope to deliver the first within the next couple years (1).

Clearly, Satan is working in the minds of some of these individuals.  In a time where many people seem to be interested in offering the choice of having a baby killed before birth, only the devil could influence someone to consider producing a "fake" person.  The domino effect of these ideas is frightening.

Once human life is special-ordered rather than conceived, life will never be the same.  No longer will each of us be a life that is unique from all others who have ever lived.  Instead our genetic selves will be molded and chiseled in a Petrie dish to comply with the social norms of the day.  And if something goes wrong, the new life will be thrown away like some defective widget or other fungible product.  So long, diversity. Hello homogeneity. (2)
And spiritually, I think it's reasonable to assume that cloned humans will not be "born" with a soul.  A human soul and spirit can only come through the breath of life through God's Spirit.  To think that we might share the world with truly soulless people -- or worse, an army possessed by demons -- sends shivers down the spine.  As the Koinonia House Web site explains, these strange genetic tamperings could change the way we view some of the prophesies in the Bible.  As one example, a group is even working on a project to clone Christ Himself (3).

God is certainly aware of the hearts of men, just as He was when the tower in Genesis was being constructed.  By the looks of things, we will soon be to the point where He must intervene to save us from our own ideas.  These are clearly the last days, but just as the years before and the years to come, THIS is the year of our Lord.
